Olympic Dumbbell weight?

Okay, this seems like a totally newbee question, but it comes down to the fact I just never used them before. And I HAVE Googled it, I'm just finding an answer there.

What does an Olympic dumbbell weigh? I know what the barbell weighs, but am just not finding the information for the dumbells.

See, I can use the gym at work and this is what they have. As I'm working out alone, in the middle of the night, I am using dumbbells for most of my work. And while I can see progress in what I'm adding, I'm rather wondering what it is I'm actually lifting, you know?

So, if anyone can give me an answer, and I'm sure someone knows here, I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

Just moved to San Diego - looking for other lifters, preferably in Bankers Hill / Hillcrest / Middletown

Flexible on days to workout, but I generally only lift 2 or 3 days/week - have discovered that I make LESS progress if I workout MORE

Somewhat flexible on hours - before or after work

i've experienced ringing in my ears for about a year now and was wondering if anyone out there lifting weights is experiencing this and also if your blood pressure has gotten higher with the ringing. i work out every other day for 90 minutes: 2/3 resistance, 1/3 cardio, plus stretching and core work. for my first 18 months i worked with a personal trainer 3x a week and have continued without him for over a year now in a well-rounded workout for toning purposes only.

i want to find a way to make the ringing go away and am looking for information that might lead to undertstanding how weight training might be related to increasing blood pressure and any dangers around that. any shared experiences and/or solutions most appreciated.

Scheduling and financial concerns have made a gym membership less than feasible for me right now, so I'm doing my best at home. I've come up with some good exercises and have been creating satisfactory results for most of my body, but I'm having a hard time finding a good way to work my lats at home. My landlord wouldn't look too kindly on my installing a pull-up bar (the house is for sale, and she wants it to remain in impeccable condition). Anyone have suggestions?

Cardio question for weight loss

I am a 53 year-old male wavering between 210 and 215 lbs., 5'10", and about 10 or 15 pounds heavier than I want to be. I have been going to gym for almost three years on an average of 2-3x a week for cardio and resistance training (and have lost 30 pounds).

My question is where do I find a chart with accurate data for setting the heart-rate on the cardio bike so that I can achieve the weight-loss results I want ? And also, for how many minutes at a time and how many times per week, etc. For about a year or so, I have set HR at around 134 and timed it for 15-20 minutes for two to three time a week.

Any and all tips greatly appreciated.

thanks!

long term goal help...

ok, so i have been going to the gym pretty much regularly for over six months, I am six foot 8", 367 lbs, 245 of which is lean body mass(i did the bod pod test) my long term goal is to gain 50 lbs of lean mass over the next two to three years, losing a few pounds right now.

I seem to be putting on muscle, but the soreness lasts for a long time, up to 8 days, but day 3 after a heavy lift i feel like shit. I am trying to take more vitamans afterwards, it seems to help with the feeling like my body is missing something.

does anyone else have these achy feelings? and how do you deal with the pain?

Hello, my name is Jim and I'm a weightlifter.

I never meant to be. It just sort of happened. I kept saying I could quit any time, but there I was, back in the gym, over and over. Pretty soon, 2 45's wasn't enough. It just didn't feel the same. I kept saying "It's only a little more...who's it going to hurt?"
Sure, a few people started to stare, but I just told myself they were jealous. They didn't understand the way I did. They hadn't felt it.
Oh, and the eating...the supplements...the 6 meals a day. Skipping the potatoes and getting the extra steak. The strange white powders....
"I'm just in a loading phase" I would say, and they would just stare and shake their head. Crea-what? they say...look's bad...
Screw them, I said. They don't understand. My cabinets full of powders and pills are a GOOD thing, dammit. I'm like a wizard...yeah...
HIIT training, Negatives, 100's...casting a spell, thats it. It is not a delusion, its a different world...
...
Wow.
...
So here I am. I broke 400 on my bench today, again...you see I lost it for awhile. Stopped cold turkey almost two years...22months 9days Iron-free.
Most miserable time of my life...

My name is Jim, and I am a weightlifter...

And damn proud of it.

PS: Anyone here? No posts in awhile, so I thought I'd start with some humor :-)

I've got an ectomorphic body, and so gaining mass is
a problem for me. Should I take creatine, and if so,
how much. I've been taking 2 spoonfuls of it per day
(with my protien sups). I really can't tell if it does
anything at all. Advice?

Hammer strength machines.

I have been using their Isolateral decline, incline, and regular chest press. It has been very good to me because of the isolateral movement. I was wondering if there is comparison between the machines and barbell bench presses. Personally, I have seen better results, because it forces both arms to move independently of each other and I don't have to worry about needing a spotter. Recently however, it seems very strange. I have recently been able to do a couple of reps at 416 lbs.(On this hammer strength machine the initial resistance is 6 pounds and I put on four forty five and one twenty five pound plate on each side. A couple people at the gym were curious at how absurd my set up looked and tried it themselves. They couldn't even push it a little. These guys were pretty buff, so I know it is quite a bit of weight I am jacking up. I just was wondering what is equivalent of the 416 lbs on the hammer strenghth on the barbell bench press.

Reps vs. Time

I've been lifting for a few years on and off, and I've just managed to get seriously back into it again. I want to make sure that I'm making the most of my time, and I get differing opinions when I ask this question:

Are the number of reps, or the time spent on a set more important?

I've lifted based solely on the number of reps per set, increasing my weight on an exercise when I can do 12 reps, and backing off to 8 when I move up in weight. I've also lifted based solely on time, where I time how long I can move a certain weight through an exercise, using a 4 second contraction/4 second expansion/ 2 second rest phase. With that, I'd up the weight when I was too comfortable with it, but keep the time the same.

Additionally, what are your opinions on super-exertion timed reps for mass building? (i.e. 30 to 60 second contraction, 30 to 60 second expansion phases thru an exercise, with only about 75% of your regular set weight)
